INFORMATION ABOUT DAVANGERE

This industrial town, renowned for its cloth mills and granary, is one of the major cities in Karnataka. The administrative headquarters of Davangere district, Davangere is popularly known as the Textile Capital of South India or the Manchester of the South. Davangere is also famous for delicacies like Benne Dose, Mandakki-Menasinakaayi and Gulladaki Undi.

Location - Davangere is located on the south-central part of Karnataka on NH4 at a distance of about 260 km away from Bangalore. Situated on the banks of the river Noyyal, Davangere is nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats.

Best Time To Visit - Davangere enjoys a pleasant tropical climate round the year. The best time to visit Davangere is between the months of October and March.

DAVANGERE HISTORY

Davangere, a city with self-styled culture, is renowned as a hub of education. Davangere was visited by Mahatma Gandhi on 2nd March 1934, who laid the foundation stone for a high school here.

  • Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary : Located about 90 km from Davangere, this sanctuary encompasses a National Park. It has recently been renamed Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary.


  • Siruvani Waterfalls and Dam :The panoramic view of this dam and the falls, situated 37-km west of Davangere, is captivating to say the least. The water here is famous for its minerals and taste.


  • Marudamalai Temple :About 12-km away from Davangere railway station, this well-known temple, situated on the Marudamalai mountain, is consecrated to Lord Muruga.


  • Black Thunder Amusement Park :This water sports and amusement park is situated about 40-km from Davangere on the Ooty main Road.


  • Forest College Museum :One of the oldest of its kind in the country, the Forest College is situated 3.5 km north of the Davangere railway station. The museum preserves plant and animal fossils.


  • Aihole :Capital of the Chalukayan kings, Aihole has more than 125 exquisitely carved temples. The oldest temple here is perhaps the 5th century Lad Khan temple.


  • Chitiradurga :This famous hill-Fort town, located 60 km away, is famous for the historic Chitiradurga Fort.


  • Ooty :Ooty is the Queen of hill stations and the capital of Nilgiris district. Davangere serves as an entry and exit point to this hugely popular hill station.


  • Fairs And Festivals :A major attraction of Davangere is the Durgambika Devi (the Grama Devi or local deity) Jatre (fest), held once in 2 years in the month of March or April. The celebrations of this festival continue for more than 10 days.
