INFORMATION ABOUT GURUVAYEER

Guruvayur is synonymous with the Sree Krishna or Guruvayurappan Temple. Located at a distance of 29 kms in northwest Kerala, Guruvayur forms an important pilgrim center visited by thousands of devotees from all over the world. It is also called the `Bhooloka Vaikunda' or the heaven on earth.

  • Guruvayoor Temple : The Guruvayur Temple is a popular pilgrim center in Kerala, dedicated to Lord Krishna who is also known as Guruvayoorappan. According to a local belief, the temple was created with words 'Guru', meaning 'preceptor of the gods and 'Vayu', the 'god of winds'. The main attraction of the Guruvayur Temple is the Sreekrishna idol, believed to have been worshipped by Vasudevar and Devaki at Dwaraka. This shrine is popularly known as 'Dakshina Dwaraka'and is in the form of a rectangle. There are a lot of mural paintings around this shrine. Guruvayur offers you many cultural sites and other tourist attractions that you can visit on your travel to Guruvayur.


  • Arattupuzha :The famous Ayyappa temple at Arattupuzha is just 14 kms south of Thrissur town. The temple here is a major attraction especially at the time of the annual Pooram festival that takes place in the months of April-May. The uniqueness of this festival is the ceremonial procession carrying the images of the deities of 41 neighboring temples to this village.


  • Vadakkumnathan Temple :This is one of the oldest temples in the state and is a classical example of the Kerala style of architecture. The temple is the venue of the world famous Pooram festival celebrated annually in April-May.


  • Irinjalakuda Koodal Manikyam Temple :Situated 10 km away from Irinjalakuda railway station, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Bharatha, the brother of Sri Rama. It is perhaps the only temple in India with Bharatha as the deity. The colorful eleven day annual festival with a pageant of thirteen caparisoned elephants is held in April-May. The festival in this temple marks the end of the Hindu temple festival season in Kerala.


  • Cheruthuruthy :Situated at a distance of about 32 km north of Thrissur. Cheruthuruthy is the seat of the Kerala Kalamandalam, renowned world over for its Kathakali training center. The famous poet, Vallathol Narayana Menon, founded the music and dance academy. Training in Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Thullal and other art forms of Kerala is imparted here.


  • Ariyannoor temple, Kandanisserry :This temple has a carved entrance gable, which has been compared to the wooden sculptures of American artist Louise Nevelson. The Siva temple at Thiruvanchikulam as well as the Sri Krishna temple at Thirukulashekharapuram is believed to be monuments from the 9th century.


  • Athirapally :It is located at a distance of about 63 km from Thrissur. It is a popular picnic spot; situated at the entrance to the Sholayar ranges and the 80-foot high waterfall is the main attraction.
