INFORMATION ABOUT HASSAN

Not much is known of the history of Hassan. It was under the control of great Hoysala Empire during 11th to 13th century AD. This was the period when the great temples of Belur and Halebid were constructed. The region of Hassan was also greatly influenced by Jainism and later it became a well-known center of Jain literature. The present-day Hassan is the headquarters of the district by the same name and a convenient base for the tourists visiting Belur and Halebid.

Ooty is a popular Holiday hill station in India. It hosts the Master Control Facility of India's space programme.

The Places of Interest and Sight Seeing



• Belur- Halebid : 38 kms from Hassan in Belur. 17 km east of Belur is Halebid. The best example of Hoysala architecture built in the 12th century, it is sheer profusion of stone sculptures. Awe inspiring craftsmanship has left no stone blank. Inside are hand lathe turned pillars.



• Koramangala :Also called Koravangala in Dudda Hubli of Hassan taluk is about 8 kms to the East of Hassan town. The village contains three temples in the Hoysala style of architecture built in the 12th century A.D.



• Shravanabelagola :Said to be the world's tallest monolithic statue, it is in dedication to Prince Bahubali, a Jain Saint. The anointment ceremony is performed once in 12 years.



• Kondajji :A village in Hassan taluk noted for the Chennakeshava temple.



• Gorur :A dam and picnic spot.



• Manjarabad : Fort, picnic spot.



• Ramnathpur :A piligrim centre.



• BY AIR :Hassan does not have an airport. The nearest airport is Bangalore, from where one can take flights to major destinations in India like Delhi, Calcutta, and Mumbai. One can also take connecting flights to destinations abroad from Bangalore.



• BY RAIL :Hassan is connected to Bangalore, Mysore, and Mangalore by regular trains. The railway station is around 2 km east of town.
