INFORMATION ABOUT KALIMPONG

Just 51 kms east of Darjeeling is situated the picturesque town of Kalimpong, the former headquarters of the Bhutanese Governor. Situited at an altitude of 1250 metres between the Deolo and Durbindra Hills, Kalimpong is an ideal place for a quiet holiday amidst gently rolling hills and deep valleys at the foot of the mighty Himalayas.

The town is a home to Nepalese, Tibetan, Bhutanese and Lepcha population.

KALIMPONG HISTORY

Till 18th Century Kalimpong was under the rule of Sikkimese rulers. Then it came under the command of the Bhutanese. Finally, in the 19th Century, the British took over Kalimpong and merged it with West Bengal.

• Kalimpong-Sites Near by : You can take a tour to Lava, which is about 32 kms away from kalimpong and is famous for the spectacular view it offers of rechi La and jelep la passes. Another place is Pedong monastery, which is 26 kms from Kalimpong. It is an old Buddhist monastery, which was established in 1837. If you are an early riser, then you can catch the beautiful sunrise at the Lolay Gaon, which is 56kms from town and offers a great view of the Khangchendzonga.



• Kalimpong-Adventure Sports :If you really love adventure sports, then this is the perfect place to come for your holidays. You can enjoy white river rafting on Teesta River. Trekking is another outdoor activity you can enjoy. Te place is so beautiful that it is a very good way of seeing wonderful places around the hill station.



• Kalimpong- Reaching there :The closest airport to kalimpong is at Bagdogra, which is about 75 kms away. The nearest railhead is at Siliguri, which is 68kms away. If you rather go by road, then you can opt for a bus, a taxi or hire a jeep from Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri.



• Kalimpong-Best time to stay :Best time to take a tour to Kalimpong is between March and mid-June or from September to December. Kalimpong-Fairs and Festivals In October, Kalimpong hosts an annual flower festival, which is definitely worth a look.
