INFORMATION ABOUT SIRMAUR

Himachal Pradesh is not only the land of snow and high mountains but also has lower hills known as Shiwalik, where too the tourists can spend their vacations, see the wonders of nature like the big lakes, wild life parks/ sanctuaries and the fossil parks etc. One such area is district Sirmaur, where a triangle of 3 important tourist places namely Nahan, Renuka and Paonta Sahib, have attracted many tourists all round the year. There are many attractions available in this triangle. One can visit these places either in the order we have explained or first visit Renuka then Nahan and lastly Paonta Sahib from Shimla side or the vice versa

SIRMAUR HISTORY

About the origin of the name,”Sirmour” there are quite a few surmises. One view being that the state derived its name as Sirmour because of the senior position it held amongst the princely hill states. Another version is that at the earliest times the capital of the state was at Sirmour and the state was so called after the name of the capital. But,how the word Sirmour originated is not known. Third version being that the state was founded by Raja Rasaloo of Jaisalmer whose one of the ancestor’s name was Sirmour and who belonged to Rasaloo family. Beyond this, nothing definite is traceable.

The Places of Interest and Sight Seeing



• Nahan town : The district headquarter, was founded by Raja Karam Parkash in 1621 AD. It is situated at an altitude of 932 m. It enjoys a pleasant climate almost throughout the year. It has several famous temples and tanks which add considerably to its attraction. It has an ancient palace in the heart of the town which attracts tourists from outside. It commands an extensive and beautiful all sides views. The town's special attractions include its three lovely walks, known as the Villa Round, the Military Round and the Hospital Round. Just below the palace is the beautiful garden known as Ranital Bagh which is one of the most beautiful spots of the town. For tourists Nahan has all modern amenities with well furnished hotels and rest houses.



• Renuka lake :45 km from Nahan, is the most important place of tourist interest in Sirmaur. The sacred and picturesque lake is shaped like a sleeping woman. Each year in November, a week long fair is held to celebrate the immortality of Renuka and her son. Several idols of Parsu Ram, believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and other local deities, placed in decorated palanquins, are carried by an impressive procession to Parsu Ram Tal. Before the idols are installed in the temple, they are given a bath in this holy lake symbolising the body of the mother.



• Churdhar peak :(3647 m) dominates the entire landscape of fields, forests and ravines. The 50 km mule track to the peak is a trekker's paradise passing through Dadahu, Sangrah, Bhawal, Gandhuri and Nauhra. An easier journey is by taxi or car to Nauhra and thereafter a walk of 16 km to the top. The peak offers a fine all round view of the Gangetic plains, the Sutluj river, Badrinath shrine, Chakrata hills and Shimla.
