INFORMATION ABOUT SRIKAKULAM

The district of Srikakulm is located in Andhra Pradesh, a southern state of India. Srikakulam used to be a part of Kalinga kingdom in ancient India. A considerable part of this district is occupied by forests. In the east flows the Bay of Bengal. Vamshadhara, Tanaya, Nagavali and Mahendra are the four main rivers of this place. Srikakulam is chiefly inhabited by tribal people . The main economic resources are timber, bamboo, manganese, mica , graphite are obtained from this place Jute constitutes the most important form of industry. Srikakulum is the land of temples. The Arasavally sun temple, the Srikurman Vishnu temple famous for its architecture and the Srimukhalingam temple deserves special mention other places of tourist interest are Baruva and Kaviti which may be visited for their scenic beauty.

SRIKAKULAM HISTORY

By virtue of being in Andhra Pradesh, the primary language is Telugu. However, since it shares a border with the East Indian state of Orissa,some people speak oriya also . Like most of the coastal districts in Andhra Pradesh, Srikakulam is an agrarian community. Srikakulam town is located near National Highway 5 that exists from Kolkata to Chennai and it is 9 kilo meters far from Srikakulam Road railway station located on Howrah-Chennai mainline. Most of the long distance trains halt at Srikakulam Road railway station. Srikakulam Road railway station is surrounded by Amadalavalasa town. Recent developments including industrial investment and the establishment of degree granting colleges have made it similar to several small Indian towns - developing very fast but hampered by a lack of infrastructure.

• Sri Kurmam : (dedicated to Vishnu's kurma-avatara or tortoise-avatara)



• Mukhalingam, Srimukhalingeswara Swamy Temple



• Arasavalli (one of the few Hindu Sun Temples)



• Salihundam :(Buddhist viharas and stupas dating back to 2 AD were excavated here).



• The nearest beach is Kallepalli but Kalingapatnam beach is mostly patronised.



• Santhikshetram, a temple built in year 2000 maintained by Satya Sai Seva Samithi near Arasavalli temple serves its visitors free of cost by providing food and shelter since year 2000 especially during Radhasapthami and Maghamasam(10th month in Telugu Calendar).
